South Indians are very famous for celebrating their festival as traditionally and with all rituals and faith. They always have that energy to covert a small festival into a big celebration. Most of them are belonging from big family and on some special days like Mahamaham Festival, Ugadi, Mysuru Dasara, Hampi Utsav, Pongal, Karaga, Onam they all used to come together enjoy the festive days. Here will talk about one of the most favourite festival pongal. South Indians considered this festival so important and still they believe and follow all the rituals and step with same respect and manners what they received.

Pongal comes in January on 14th, however according to Tamil calendar it is on 15th. As like national festivals, in south india people get holidays on work, school and other. Pongal is not only a single day festival, there are some rituals to done before pongal so it’s for more than a day. In villages it is celebrate for four days while in cities it just for one day.

The four days are called bhogi, thai pongal, mattu pongal and kaanum pongal. Bhogi pongal is the days when most of the people celebrate pongal. People used to clean their houses before pongal and out the unnecessary thing and buy new things. It believes that removing all this unusable thing removes the negativity from home and create a positive and clam energy. Also puja takes place on this day. People worship lord Indra .

As pongal means boiling out, a dish called pongal itself is cooked under the sunlight in yard or ground because pongal having the main importance of sun as its considered as Surya deva. Mostly people prefer to cook pongal in clay utensil and also they create a whole clay stove and burn fire with wood. We can see that thing which is used for making pongal is nature gifted.

Mattu Pongal is for worship of the cattle known as Mattu. Cattle are bathed, their horns polished and painted in bright colours, and garlands of flowers placed around their necks.also on this day people used to play a game with bull. In that participant have to stop the bull on ground for the last long time they can.

On this festival, people wear their traditional south Indian outfit. Women used to wear south Indian style silk saree and lehenga set. Generally kavasu saree is mostly you can see women wearing on pongal festival. Also there are different Kanchipuram, Kanjivaram, Pochampalli, the Mysore Silk, Mysore crepes and South Indian women usually don’t wear heavy makeup, somewhere there beauty is enough to glow however one thing which add more beauty and charm to their look in their jewellery. We all know that South Indian women having huge collection of jewellery as they tradition is like that. Mostly they having gold jewellery and in day to day life they too wear minimal gold jewellery so in the occasion of Pongal it becomes must to wear sarees. But the kavasu is one top of this list.

You can easily see that every woman from south India wears waist belt on traditional outfits. They used to match their waist belt to their jewellery. Anklet is one of the most common ornaments that have been worn by women across India. As wearing it has lots of benefits along with just for style and looks good. It is said that anklet should be made of silver only however some people prefer gold too. In south india generally women wear gold anklet. As like kamar bandh it depends that they have to wear simple or heavy anklet.

The simpler they are, the more attractive they look. There outfit and jewellery’s shine is enough to rock everywhere they may go.
